Hard Drive traces the story of Bill Gates and the rise of the Microsoft startup to a multinational and then world leader. The book stops in 1992 at the time of the take-off of Windows. The title is a word game: Hard Drive is of course the hard drive, but one could also translate it by hard-hungry or hard-worker.
Because Bill Gates was hard on business. Hard with its competitors, hard with its employees, hard with its partners, and hard with itself. By the age of 13 he had grown used to working long hours. At the time he was exhausted in sleepless nights to debug the Digital computer of his school. Then, during the Microsoft years, Gates spent most of his time working tirelessly. He remained in the office until three or four in the morning, to the detriment of his personal hygiene and his private life. It was not uncommon for him to send a remontrance to a developer after rereading code at an early hour of the night.
