When I published my first novel, In the Garden of the Ogre (Gallimard), in the summer of 2014, some French journalists were surprised that a Moroccan woman could write such a book. They meant "a free and sexual book", a trashy and raw book, that tells the story of a woman suffering from sex addiction. As if, culturally, I should have been more modest, more reserved. As if I should have been content to write an erotic book with Orientalist accents, worthy descendant of Sheherazade.
